Gqeberha Artist Showcases Work With Performing Artists At The Athenium

SELF-taught artist Moagi Letseka is set to showcase his work while shining a light on other Gqeberha creatives this Saturday, December 2 at the Athenium.

The 24-year-old whose fabric painting has been seen at SA Fashion week where he collaborated with gender-neutral and Afri-modern streetwear brand Gugubygugu from Gqeberha born designer Gqeberha is hosting his first exhibition this weekend on December 2.

The free event which starts at 6pm will feature a live band, poetry and performance art.

“ People can expect a great display of art, not just me but from the band performing, the poetry, also just good vibes,” said the artist sharing that the exhibition was a way for him to challenge himself.

“I have been drawing since I was born, I used to draw a lot of comics, I enjoyed expressing myself through art.

“I have never painted on canvas before so, I used the exhibition as motivation to start painting as much as I can, also to try out new ways of making an income from art,” he said.

The live entertainment for the day is presented by Nantsika a GQ based collective that focuses on youth culture and creativity.

“I collaborated with Nantsika because they are upcoming, and they are so talented and not a lot of people know of them. So I hope this gives them an opportunity to show Gqeberha what they are made of,” he said

Letseka works in various mediums from digital painitng to clothing but will be focusing on acrylic for the exhibition.

“My favourite medium is acrylic painting, I feel like I challenge myself more, and it feels more rewarding when I finish a acrylic painting then any other medium,” he said adding that he does not have a difinitve style.

“My style is very fluid, it changes, I don’t like doing the same thing so I always change my Color pallets and style.”

He currently works in retail but dreams of making a living as a full-time artist.  The talented artist whose work has a distinct anime and comic book influence, can be seen on instagram
