GQ Silent Book Club (SBC) recently celebrated its first anniversary, and what a fantastic year of reading it’s been. I asked a few readers what their favourite things about SBC are.
Razia (one of the amazing organisers):
“Knowing that there are so many others who share the love of reading.”
Mich:
“It’s awesome knowing your fellow bookworms are around you, reading their book at the same time as you (a shared passion), and then getting to meet them and share your reads afterwards.”
Danielle:
“It’s nice to see your friends, especially your bookish friends. It’s nice when reading becomes a community hobby rather than a solo hobby. It’s just a moment of peace, especially like this one, where it was at St George’s Park. You’re out in nature, it was a beautiful day, you chat and hang out, get some actual page-turning reading time, and it’s lovely.”
Andrea:
“I love SBC because it’s two hours in total that I know I’ll be seeing at least one book bestie! The reading hour is a time for stillness — to either get lost between the pages of a book or to jot down notes for the week.
Also, it’s amazing to see so many people of all ages being united by books.”
Rene:
“I have never joined a book club because I am very much a mood reader and could never stick to a club that picks the book I’m supposed to read. My favourite thing about SBC is that I can read whatever I want, but still get to mix and interact with other book people.”
Lauren:
“I love the peace and quiet and the almost forced reading without distractions. You can just pause and read. It’s a break from my daily life.”
If you share any of these sentiments and you haven’t been to a Silent Book Club before, come along to the next one in March and follow GQ SBC on Instagram and Facebook to get the latest news and updates.
