Gogi Korean Restaurant, The New Halaal Restaurant On The Block

FAZIELA HARRIS-DAVIDS:

IN Cape Town and looking for a Korean restaurant that is strictly halaal? Then look no further than Gogi Korean BBQ. Situated in St Peters Square, Observatory, right next to Cape Town Korea Market, the lovely little restaurant is like a tiny bubble of happiness.

Bookings are essential, and judging by how fully booked it was, we were lucky to get a table. The wait staff were amazing and knowledgeable of the menu, which is a great help with navigating all the dishes as they will advise what would be best to try out and which dishes work great together.

Furnished with a fusion of industrial and tastes of Korea, the restaurant ambience is everything a Kdrama fan dreams of. With Kpop playing on the monitor and playing softly through the speakers, so as to make the ambience inviting and not overwhelming at all.

The greatest draw being the Korean BBQ, which is carefully explained to you while the BBQ is heated up right in front of you. The waiter took us through all the various side dishes and even explained to us how to assemble them in a lettuce wrap.

I was a bit hesitant with having my family join, as I am the one with the adventurous palate, but they absolutely loved everything, my picky 8 year old munching on the korean fried chicken which he said was “so mind blowing mommy, I can eat like this every day!”

The chicken and coriander dumplings are still my absolute favorite, and adding in the Korean fried chicken because seriously, it would be amazing to eat like that every day.

We stopped at Cape Town Korea Market right next door, a mandatory stop if you ask me, to get some rice paper, seaweed snacks, bubble tea and other sauces for us to make at home. What I absolutely love is that all Halaal items are marked green, which makes for such an amazing shopping experience.

And if stuck for time, the take-away has some amazing snacks like korean corn dogs, dumplings and gimbap for you to grab and have in their car.

Or why not grab a brown tea full sugar bubble tea instead? Its like a reward.
