From newsroom to novels: 041Online editor releases Confession Collector ahead of Women’s Month

041Online Managing Editor Eleanor Douglas-Meyers is stepping from the newsroom into fiction with the release of her first solo novel, Confession Collector, launching on 1 August, the first day of Women’s Month.

The South African mystery marks her third published book, following the co-authored novels Bound by Fire and Between Embers, written with head of the 021FOCUS section Faziela Harris-Davids, and draws inspiration from more than two decades spent listening to people’s stories as a journalist.

A mystery built on human connection

At the heart of Confession Collector is Mira, a woman with an unusual gift: strangers instinctively trust her with their deepest secrets.

What begins as a series of seemingly unrelated conversations slowly reveals hidden connections, forgotten lives and a mystery that draws Mira into an investigation she never intended to solve.

The idea was inspired by Douglas-Meyers’ own experiences.

“I’ve always had strangers tell me their stories. It happens in coffee shops, airports and supermarket queues. I’ve always wondered what makes someone decide, in a single moment, to trust a complete stranger.”

A different kind of Women’s Month story

While Confession Collector is first and foremost a mystery, Douglas-Meyers says launching the novel at the start of Women’s Month was intentional.

“I love stories about resilient women, and many of the most successful books featuring women of colour explore incredible hardship. Those stories are important. But I don’t think they should be the only stories we get to tell.”

She hopes the novel offers readers something different.

“I wanted to write a mystery where a woman of colour wasn’t defined by trauma. She gets to solve a mystery, make mistakes, laugh, be hopeful and simply exist as a fully realised character. To me, that’s just as important.”

Inspired by real life

Although the novel is entirely fictional, Douglas-Meyers says years of working as a journalist, along with countless unexpected conversations with strangers, laid the foundation for the story.

She also credits living with a detective husband for sparking her fascination with investigations, evidence and the small details that often become the biggest clues.

Confession Collector launches on Saturday, 1 August 2026, at Enchanted Alchemy. The launch event has sold out, but copies of the novel remain available to order.

Editor’s note: Eleanor Douglas-Meyers is the founder and Managing Editor of 041Online.
