VERONICA CHARLES | 041Holistic
In my work as a holistic skincare formulator and as someone deeply committed to both healing and sustainability, I’ve learned something powerful: some of the most potent skincare ingredients don’t come from pristine labs or exotic imports. They come from what we throw away.
Think: yesterday’s coffee grounds, the peel of the orange you had at lunch, even the vanilla pod that gave your cake its flavour. When we upcycle, we give these leftovers a second life — one that’s rich in nutrients, rooted in intention, and remarkably good for the skin.
As the owner of Green Fairy Products, based right here in Nelson Mandela Bay, I’ve made it my mission to craft skin-loving, earth-friendly bars that tell a story, not just of self-care, but of circular care.
What Is Upcycled Skincare, Really?
Upcycling in beauty means repurposing by-products from the food industry, like citrus peels or coffee grounds, into valuable ingredients for skincare. Paired with zero-waste practices (no landfill waste, refillable packaging, minimal excess), this approach creates beauty products that are clean, ethical, and truly sustainable.
It’s about more than just being “green.” It’s about redefining what luxury looks like and making sure our skincare rituals respect the planet as much as our bodies.
Why Should Nelson Mandela Bay Care?
As Bay locals, we understand resourcefulness. We know how to stretch what we have and create beauty in unexpected places. Upcycled beauty taps into that spirit, offering high-performing products that are:
- Better for your skin: Rich in antioxidants, natural exfoliants and essential oils.
- Better for the environment: Diverts waste, lowers emissions, and reduces reliance on new crops or synthetic fillers.
- Better for the community: Supports local producers and markets through partnerships.
We don’t need more stuff. We need smarter, more sustainable choices — and upcycled skincare is one of them.
How We Do It at Green Fairy
At Green Fairy Products, every bar we make is a blend of botanicals and intention, and many feature ingredients that would’ve otherwise been thrown away.
Vanilla Coffee Exfoliating Bar
- Coffee Grounds: Collected from local cafés, cleaned, dried, and milled to create a gentle scrub that boosts circulation and smooths the skin.
- Madagascar Vanilla Pods: After being used to extract vanilla, the pods still hold aromatic compounds. We blend them into our soap base to bring warmth, antioxidants, and a dreamy scent to every bar.
Citrus-Infused Botanical Bars
- Mandarin & Orange Peels: Infused into a tincture packed with limonene, vitamin C and calming flavonoids — ideal for dull or uneven skin.
- We combine these with skin-loving oils like olive, coconut, and castor to craft bars that cleanse without stripping, exfoliate without harming, and delight every time you reach for them.
The Science Bit: Biopolymers from Food Waste
Alongside our plant-based formulas, we’ve been integrating biopolymer technology into our work. These are natural, biodegradable alternatives to synthetic texture enhancers — and they often come from unexpected places:
- Seaweed alginate becomes hydrating gels or peel-off masks.
- Pullulan (from starch waste) makes flexible, dissolvable face masks.
- Cellulose from rice husks or sugarcane bagasse helps stabilise products while remaining kind to the earth.
These natural materials help us reduce plastic packaging, cut down synthetic load, and bring more nature into our formulations without compromise.
