From Drumbeats to Fire Dancing: Don’t Miss Whale Festival 2025

The annual Algoa Bay Whale Festival is back, and this year it’s bigger, bolder, and bursting with ocean-inspired magic! Taking place on Sunday, 1 June 2025, at the scenic Willows Resort and Conference Centre, this all-day celebration of sea, culture and community promises something for everyone—from ocean lovers and eco-warriors to families just looking for a lekker day out.

Raggy Charters gave us a preview and this is what we learnt…Entry is just R30pp (free for under 2s), and you’ll want to get there early to catch the African Drumbeat welcome—think marimbas, drumming circles, and an electric coastal vibe from the get-go.

Here’s what’s making waves at this year’s Whale Festival:

Morning Motivation: Whale Trail Hike

Whether you’re up for a 6km power trail or a chilled 3km wander, the Whale Trail Run/Walk/Hike kicks off at 09h00, letting you trace the footsteps (or fluke prints) of migrating whales along our coast.

Festival Feels: Live Music All Day

From 11h30 to sunset, the main stage comes alive with local talent, including:

  • Claire North, Elizabeth Kayne, and Big Man & Bear
  • Rock vibes from Written in Scarlett and 10,000 Spoons
  • A dreamy closing set from Claire North & Russel Sneyd

Family Fun & Edutainment

Keep the kids smiling with:

  • VR adventures
  • Jumping castles
  • A Sandcastle Building Competition
  • Plus, Kid’s Perfect Events running all day indoors!

Food, Crafts & Conservation

Grab a bite from local food trucks (yes, there’s everything from gourmet to classic South African street food), explore indoor and outdoor craft markets, and pop by the Waste Trade Recycling Project to get clued up on sustainable living.

Nature fans can join intertidal conservation walks and heritage walk-and-talks, while the photo comp and marine exhibits will get everyone thinking about how to protect our ocean playground.

Don’t Miss the Fire Finale

As the sun dips, the Fyre Faeries light up the night with a dazzling fire-dancing show set to live drumming (18h30 – 19h30). It’s the perfect high-energy send-off after a full day of fun.

Bonus: Free Educational Talk – 31 May

Warm up for the main event with a free educational talk the day before. No ticket needed—just your curiosity and love for the sea.
