041Business Gerald Pietersen shares his personal business story about shifting from a coffee shop owner to becoming a landlord, a challenging decision, filled with questions and uncertainties.
After sharing an article on diversifying your business, I was challenged with the opportunity to
diversify.
The challenge was shifting from a coffee shop owner to becoming a landlord. This was and still is a
tough decision to navigate, due to the countless questions that I am grappling with.
Some of those questions are:
- Have I given up on the dream of a coffee shop?
- Was the intention not to influence the community to engage more in the idea of a coffee
shop paired with entertainment? - Will the coffee shop still be accepted when it is re-launched in the future?
With all this uncertainty around a sound and researched business decision I had to deal with the
emotions as well.
This provided an opportunity to reflect on what diversifying means and how these play into the
decision that was at hand.
The time came to shift the focus to the new reality.
It was soon realized that shifting one’s focus requires a significant amount of positive thinking and
being honest with oneself.
I realised that the benefits far outweighed the cost and effort of staying the same. The decision that
was made, created flexibility related to time and financial management. Establishing my focus meant
staying on track with the decision made and not having to explain the decision to anyone not directly
affected.
The reality that comes with shifting one’s focus is that it is a continuous act. One has to be conscious
of not letting your thoughts go into what-if questions.
Once you have decided, and have considered the cost of the decision, it is important to train your
mind to stay committed to the course. With all intentions considered at the beginning of the
decision, it is important to remember that those intentions should remain the driving force.
The more you practise to remain focused, the easier it will become. This will then become a
blueprint for your decision-making and ability to remain focused.
