Floral Inspired Fashion Collection A New Start For Designer

Local design Brand Truly Karin ushers in the Spring with a debut fashion show and floral inspirations.

“This is my first solo show, I’ve done a few fashion shows before in collaborating with other designers but this is the first time I’m hosting my own fashion show,” says  Karin Roman.

Truly Karin is a proudly local SA brand based in Uitenhage Eastern Cape. Karin started making clothes as a hobby, enrolling in classes as something to do for fun.

“I never knew I had this hidden talent until I went for sewing classes and discovered my passion for fashion,” she says.

She started her brand in 2019 going full-time in 2020 when she was retrenched from her corporate job, the business took off and she is now ready to take a leap of faith and take her business to the next level.

Hosted by local comedian Francois Scholtz the September 9th show which will be taking place at the Tramways Building will be divided into three segments.

“The first segment is the Truly Karen brand range which is a recreation of everything I’ve made so far since 2018 when I started. I’m just recreating all my garments in a truly Karen branded fabric and then I have my matric farewell girls and my custom clients showcasing their dresses and finally it is my spring/summer collection,” she said.

Sneak peeks of the collection show an abundance of colour, flowers and foliage.

“The inspiration behind this collection is spring, the beginning of a new season, the beginning of something new, a new adventure for Truly Karen because this is my first show and I’m taking my brand to a new level and exposing myself. The flowers were a big inspiration because many start blooming in September and this a sort of blooming for myself, it’s is coming out of my comfort zone,” says the self-confessed introvert.

She is excited to be going solo on the event but says she could not do it without friends and family like her childhood friend Hillary who has been assisting with the planning and fellow Nelson Mandela Bay designer Braemore Lundall-Sauls of Braemore Design who has assisted with industry advice.

“He has done a few shows before so whenever I get stuck or I need help I would go to him and he would assist,” she says.

Karin who sells her designs online, is very passionate about size and style inclusivity and hopes to open brick-and-mortar stores,  first in Nelson Mandela Bay and then the rest of the country, but for now the focus of her one-man operation is on the show.

“I’m working on my own what makes it so special is because it’s my baby it’s my it’s my dream it’s it’s my passion it it’s what I eat what I live for so it makes it special because it’s also my first show and I’m literally coming out of my comfort zone,” she said.
