Five Nelson Mandela Bay Beaches Earn Blue Flag Status for 2025/2026

Nelson Mandela Bay’s coastline is once again getting international recognition. Kings, Humewood, and Hobie Beaches have all received full Blue Flag status for the 2025/2026 season, while Bluewater Bay and Wells Estate earned pilot status. It’s a major nod to the city’s ongoing coastal management and tourism efforts.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s shoreline continues to prove why it’s one of the country’s most celebrated. The metro announced that five of its beaches have been recognised under the internationally acclaimed Blue Flag Programme for 2025/2026, a certification reserved for beaches that meet global standards in water quality, safety, environmental education, and management.

World-Class Recognition

Kings Beach, Humewood Beach, and Hobie Beach each received full Blue Flag status, reaffirming their place among South Africa’s best. Bluewater Bay and Wells Estate were granted Pilot Phase recognition, signalling they’re on track for full accreditation soon.

The achievement highlights the municipality’s focus on maintaining clean, safe, and sustainable public spaces that benefit both residents and visitors.

Mayor Welcomes the News

Executive Mayor Cllr Babalwa Lobishe called the announcement a win for the metro’s people and its environment.

“This recognition is not only a celebration of our pristine coastline but also a testament to our collective effort as a city to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment,” she said. “Our beaches are a source of pride and opportunity, spaces that connect our people, attract tourism, and drive local economic activity.”

Community and Sustainability

Beyond the recognition, the municipality emphasised that the award reflects teamwork across departments, from environmental management and lifeguards to tourism staff and community volunteers. Residents are encouraged to help protect the coastline by disposing of litter responsibly, respecting public facilities, and reporting any damage or pollution.

“Together, we can protect these shared public assets and uphold the Blue Flag standards that bring pride and opportunity to our city,” the statement read.

What Blue Flag Means

The Blue Flag Programme is a global initiative that recognises beaches and marinas meeting strict standards in environmental management, safety, services, and water quality. Only a handful of beaches in South Africa achieve the certification each year, making Nelson Mandela Bay’s five recognitions an impressive milestone.

A Coastline of Possibility

As summer approaches, locals and visitors alike can take pride in knowing that their city’s beaches are being recognised for quality, accessibility, and care. From family picnics to surf sessions, the Bay’s coastline continues to be both a community space and a symbol of local excellence.
