Small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy and with that in mind, we start a brand new column, 041business, where business owner, HR professional and trainer Gerald Pieterson simplifies the art of business for potential entrepreneurs.

During the first moon landing Neil Armstrong famously said “One step for man is a giant leap for mankind”
So too is it in business, that very small step could liberate a generation. How would you feel if I were to tell you it is simple to start a business? It is true.
So, you register on Bizportal, verify your identity, log in register, and pay the R250 then that’s that.
The real question is if it really is that easy.
It is important to note that there is a significant difference between starting and running a business.
I have learned that the hard way. Unfortunately, I have not graduated yet (still learning as I go). The process can be cumbersome, lonely and at times uncertain. The beauty lies in the conviction that took place that moment you took the decision.
No matter how big or small the decision was, you took it. You are here now and must decide what to
work with.
So, allow me to help you navigate the context around the business. This is where we will talk about start-ups, hustling, collaborations, and avenues that can help you explore the opportunity that is waiting at your doorstep.
I have to say that the above is just like making coffee. There are different steps to making coffee, we all may not make it the same way and the results may be promising or disastrous.
I am not sure if you’ve ever had a Cortado (type of coffee) that lacks balance and complexity. Imagine a flat white that is way too flat. The takeaway from this is that one should walk away with sufficient
information to govern your decisions which will allow you to manage your business.
My encouragement is for you to join this explorative journey to unpack the honest truth around understanding your business better and working towards plugging holes where possible.
The initial success in a business lies in trying, and that is the first step we will take!
