Code Like a Girl is set to make waves in Nelson Mandela Bay with its groundbreaking initiative to empower young girls through coding. This program aims to address the gender gap in STEM fields by offering vital skills and opportunities to underprivileged youth across South Africa.
In a world that increasingly revolves around technology and innovation, the representation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) remains significantly underrepresented. To address this gap and foster a more inclusive future, the Code Like a Girl program has emerged as a powerful initiative designed to introduce underprivileged girls to the world of coding and digital careers.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Code Like a Girl is not just another educational program; it’s a mission to create a more digital and inclusive future by targeting the current lack of female representation in STEM fields. Through a meticulously structured educational curriculum, this initiative aims to empower young women with the essential coding skills needed to thrive in today’s digital landscape. By focusing on underprivileged girls, the program is committed to bridging the gap and building a robust talent pipeline that aligns with both current and future skills demands.
How It Works
The program is delivered through a series of dynamic 5-Day Coding Bootcamps, employing a hybrid model that caters to both on-site and virtual participants.
- On-Site Coding Bootcamps: These are hosted at 19 Vodacom Schools of Excellence spread across all 9 provinces of South Africa. The aim is to reach girls in schools located in and around these areas, providing them with hands-on experience and direct access to digital resources.
- Virtual Coding Bootcamps: For those unable to attend in person, the program offers virtual bootcamps accessible from anywhere in the country. This flexibility ensures that no girl is left behind due to geographic constraints.
Who Can Join?
The program is open to girls aged 14 – 18 who are passionate about pursuing a STEM career.
- On-Site Bootcamp: Participants must be enrolled at a school or reside near a Vodacom School of Excellence, which is equipped with laptops and internet connectivity.
- Virtual Bootcamp: To join the virtual sessions, participants need a computer with internet access.
