Damian Schmidt Returns to Algoa Country—And This Time, He’s Taking Over Weekend Lunch on Algoa FM

After more than a decade in Johannesburg radio, Damian Schmidt is coming home – to both the Eastern Cape and to the airwaves of Algoa FM. Starting Saturday, June 7, Schmidt will host Weekend Lunch every Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 3 pm.

Schmidt, who began his career in Nelson Mandela Bay’s community radio scene before moving to Joburg, says the return is both personal and professional.

“I’m coming home to be near my family and for a change of pace,” he says. “Johannesburg has been a big learning curve, and I’ll be bringing that expertise back to the Eastern Cape.”

With a decade of national radio experience and award nominations under his belt – including a 2015 MTN Radio Awards nod for Best Afternoon Drive Presenter and a 2023 Telkom Radio Awards nomination for Best Daytime Show – Schmidt brings both warmth and a wealth of knowledge to the mic.

During his time on Mix 93.8 FM, Schmidt interviewed a roll call of top South African musicians and international stars. It’s something he plans to continue doing in Algoa Country.

“Much of my career has been built around interviews with artists,” he explains. “I want to keep shining a spotlight on local and national talent.”

Algoa FM Programme Manager Mio Khondleka says the station is excited about what Schmidt brings to the table:

“It’s wonderful to have Damian back in the area. His return strengthens our line-up, and he brings that authentic Algoa Country energy we love. We’re looking forward to what he’ll be serving up on Weekend Lunch!”

In a small programming shuffle, Roch-Lè Bloem, who previously hosted the Saturday lunch slot, will now take over Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 pm.

Though Schmidt will still be active as a voice-over artist and MC, he’s most looking forward to reconnecting with the city that first launched his career.

“One of the biggest perks? Not needing a GPS to get around town anymore.”
