Gqeberha, South Africa – As Nelson Mandela Day approaches, South Africans are gearing up for a heartwarming initiative! On 20 March, Nelson Mandela University will host a vibrant blanket installation celebrating the United Nations International Day of Happiness. Organized by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, this event promises a spectacular display of creativity, unity, and compassion.
This year’s centrepiece is a bright yellow smiley emoji with sparkling blue eyes and a red smile, surrounded by a rainbow of hues—reds, oranges, blues, purples, and pinks. Handmade by KnitWits nationwide, these blankets form a tapestry of happiness. A quarter of the donated blankets will remain in Gqeberha, bringing warmth to those in need in the Eastern Cape.
Weaving Kindness Across Communities
Gqeberha ambassadors have been pivotal in collecting blankets, embodying Madiba’s legacy of compassion and social responsibility.
“With significant needs in our province, we hope these blankets bring comfort to both bodies and hearts,” said local ambassadors. “This initiative highlights the incredible power of kindness, creativity, and collective action.”
67 Blankets: A Legacy of Warmth
What began in 2013 as a challenge by Carolyn Steyn to craft 67 blankets for Mandela Day has grown into a global movement of compassion. This year’s installation in Gqeberha celebrates happiness and unity, reminding us of the power of communities coming together.
How to Join the Movement
It’s not too late to take part! Knit or crochet a blanket and deliver it to your nearest ambassador or bring it to the event. Each creation contributes to this vibrant celebration, spreading warmth and joy to those who need it most.
