Comedians Alfred Adriaan and Marc Lottering enjoyed a significant moment on Sunday, performing to packed audiences in Gqeberha. For Adriaan, originally from Hankey, sharing the stage with his idol Lottering marked a major milestone in his career.
“I had four brandies when I found the nerve to ask my idol to perform with me, and he said yes,” Adriaan recounted to the crowd, recalling his early days watching Lottering live at the Opera House in Gqeberha.
Lottering eagerly agreed to the collaboration. “I said yes because the person you see on stage is the same person offstage,” he explained, adding with a laugh, “Plus, he has a huge fan base, so I knew we’d sell out.”
The two-hour performances at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre left audiences in stitches. Fans enjoyed watching the comedians banter and play off each other, as well as dive into their individual sets that showcased their unique comedic styles. The pair even entertained the crowd in song.
Adriaan expressed his happiness about returning to Gqeberha, where he spent much of his youth, attending Andrew Rabie High School and later the University of Port Elizabeth, now Nelson Mandela University.
Lottering charmed the audience with stories of his upbringing in Cape Town’s Mitchells Plain and delighted them with some of his most beloved characters.
The overwhelming turnout from Nelson Mandela Bay fans, even on a Sunday morning, highlighted the duo’s popularity. Despite their different comedic approaches, their synergy was apparent, and it was clear they hold mutual respect for each other.
Next, the comedy duo is set to perform in Cape Town, followed by Muldersdrift, before concluding their tour in East London in July.
