Citizens Unite in Thousands to Walk for a Cause: Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer 2024

The Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, presented by ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, is more than just an annual event—it’s a powerful testament to the Eastern Cape and Garden Route’s dedication to supporting those affected by cancer. With the event taking place on Saturday, 26 October, the anticipation and excitement in Algoa Country are palpable, as thousands of citizens prepare to walk in solidarity for a cause that touches everyone.

Algoa FM’s managing director, Alfie Jay, expresses the deep-rooted connection the community has with the walk. “This family event, now in its 26th year, holds a special place in the hearts of all of us at Algoa FM and the people of Algoa Country. Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another,” he says.

A Record-Breaking Year

This year’s walk is expected to break records, with late entries still pouring in. The event could see as many as 13,500 participants—a monumental show of support that demonstrates the community’s commitment to the cause. Whether walking for a loved one, in memory of someone, or for their own personal journey, participants are coming together to make an impact.

Starting at 8am on Pollock Beach in Gqeberha, walkers will take the scenic 5-kilometre route along the beachfront. But the event isn’t limited to Gqeberha. For the first time, the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer will also be hosted in East London and George, with a virtual option available for participants across the country.

Family Fun and Activations

What makes this event even more special are the exciting activations along the route. Sponsors such as ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, MTN, and Algoa FM have pulled out all the stops to ensure a fun and vibrant atmosphere. In East London and Gqeberha, the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture will be joining in the fun, and aQuellé will be on hand at the finish line with free water to keep everyone hydrated.

Radhiant, a key partner in the event, will be providing free mammogram scans at the start and finish points of all three locations, including the virtual walk. This incredible initiative allows participants to not only show their support but also take proactive steps for their own health.

More Than Just a Walk

At the heart of the event is a sense of community and family. In Gqeberha, walkers will be able to unwind and celebrate in the Race Village on the Pollock Beach grass area, where a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere awaits. Twelve food trucks will offer a variety of treats, and there’s a supervised kids’ Play Park for the little ones. Parents can relax in a designated seating area while their children enjoy the festivities.

For added safety, a rolling road closure will be in place from 1st Avenue to Admiralty Drive between 7am and 11am, ensuring the route remains secure for all participants.

A Community United

The Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated sponsors. In addition to ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, the event has the backing of aQuellé, the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture, MTN, Value Added Life, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, The Courier Guy, and Radhiant Diagnostic Imaging. Together, they are making it possible for the event to grow and reach even more people.

As the clock ticks closer to the big day, the citizens of Algoa Country are preparing to walk with purpose, united by a common cause: to fight cancer, one step at a time.

Mark your calendars and get ready to join thousands of others in what promises to be a record-breaking and heartwarming event. Whether in Gqeberha, East London, George, or virtually, this year’s Big Walk for Cancer is set to inspire and uplift.
