In the world of textile design, where every thread and pattern tells a story, Xolela Madlanga stands out as an artist who weaves not just fabric but inspiration into her creations. Her latest collection, a series of scarves dedicated to the remarkable women who have influenced her life, is a testament to the power of mentorship, leadership, and the enduring impact of female empowerment.
Reflecting on the Journey
When asked about the inspiration behind this collection, Xolela explains, “I was reflecting on my journey and realized that I’ve always been surrounded by excellent women leaders who invested time, energy, resources, and themselves into my growth. How I lead, how I do business, and who I want to be is inspired by their teachings and the principles they represent. They are the people I want to emulate.”
This collection isn’t just about honouring a few; it’s about celebrating a whole nation of phenomenal women. Each scarf is a tribute to the values and characteristics these women embody, making them not just accessories but symbols of strength, integrity, and leadership.
Stories Woven into Fabric
Each scarf in this collection tells a unique story. The “Hilda Integrity” scarf, for instance, is named after Xolela’s first mentor, who taught her the importance of doing the right thing, treating people with respect, and always putting your best foot forward. Similarly, the “Michelle Power” scarf reflects the influence of a woman whose involvement in any project ensures a certain level of excellence and quality.
Xolela’s design process is deeply personal. “My technique involves using shapes, colour, and symbolism to communicate the story I want to tell,” she shares. For example, the “Sade Bright” scarf incorporates soft, rounded shapes and lively colours, reflecting a personality that is vibrant and full of life. Each design is a reflection of the woman it honours, making these scarves not just fashion pieces but wearable narratives.
A Touch of Luxury
Crafted from Armani satin, the scarves are designed to be as luxurious as the women they represent. Xolela chose this material to reflect the quality and elegance she wanted to convey. “I wanted this limited range to be luxurious and the best quality I can give, reflecting the women I want to honour,” she says.
Gifting and Customization
The women who received these scarves were deeply moved by the gesture. “The responses were positively overwhelming,” Xolela recalls. “Everyone was super excited to have something named after them, and it just warmed me up so much.”
Looking ahead, Xolela hints at exciting plans for 2025 to expand the collection. She also offers customization on certain products, allowing customers to have their own stories woven into the fabric.
A Message of Empowerment
Through this collection, Xolela hopes to convey a powerful message: “The fabric of who we are consists of the people who pour into us because they believe in us, even when we are not living up to our potential.” She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, support, and the small acts of kindness that can change lives.
As a self-taught designer, Xolela’s journey is one of passion and perseverance. Her design aesthetic, which she describes as “Simply Emotive African prints, patterns, and art,” is constantly evolving as she explores new techniques and challenges herself to push the boundaries of her craft.
Looking to the Future
As she revises her plans for the future, Xolela is focused on pursuing projects that have a significant message. She is eager to work with brands that make a difference in society and to continue creating meaningful work that resonates with her audience.
