Bright socks, brighter futures: PNA Funky Socks Day celebrates five years of changing children’s lives

Colourful socks will once again become a symbol of hope this September as the PNA Funky Socks Day campaign celebrates five years of supporting children across Southern Africa.

What started as a light-hearted initiative has grown into one of South Africa’s most recognisable fundraising campaigns, bringing together schools, businesses and families to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

This year marks five years of Breadline Africa participating as one of the campaign’s beneficiaries alongside Rally to Read and Matla a Bana.

Five years of making a difference

The 2026 PNA Funky Socks Day campaign officially launched on 16 June, Youth Day, with National Funky Socks Day set to take place on Friday, 11 September.

Every R10 sticker sold at PNA stores across South Africa will help fund the work of the three beneficiary organisations, each dedicated to improving the lives of children.

For Breadline Africa, the funds raised will once again go towards providing educational resource packs to early childhood development centres in under-resourced communities.

Last year’s campaign helped deliver 50 educational resource packs filled with stationery and learning materials, giving young children more opportunities to learn through play.

A campaign built on joy

Breadline Africa CEO Marion Wagner says the campaign’s greatest strength is that it shows people that giving back can be both meaningful and fun.

“There is something incredibly joyful about Funky Socks Day. It reminds us that doing good does not always have to feel heavy. Sometimes it looks like bright socks and laughter in a classroom. Sometimes it looks like people showing up for children they may never meet, simply because they care.”

She added that Breadline Africa is deeply grateful to PNA for supporting the organisation over the past five years.

Bigger goals for 2026

The 2025 campaign raised R2 million across Southern Africa.

This year, organisers hope to raise R2.5 million through sticker sales and donations, allowing even more children to benefit from educational resources and support programmes.

Getting involved is simple. Supporters can purchase a R10 Funky Socks Day sticker at PNA stores nationwide or online, order stickers for schools and workplaces, and wear their brightest socks on 11 September.

Why this matters for Nelson Mandela Bay

Schools, businesses and families across Nelson Mandela Bay have long embraced fun, community-driven fundraising initiatives. PNA Funky Socks Day offers another opportunity for local residents to make a small contribution that can have a lasting impact on children’s education and wellbeing across South Africa.
