ADvTECH Unveils Emeris – A Bold New Era in Private Higher Education

The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) is reshaping the future of private higher education in South Africa. Varsity College, Vega, and MSA will come together under one powerful new name: Emeris.

The new brand officially launches in 2026, just as upcoming legislative reforms will, for the first time, allow private institutions that meet the right criteria to be recognised as universities.

“The simplification of our premium brand structures under the Emeris name marks a significant step on our journey to be recognised as a University,” said ADvTECH Group CEO Geoff Whyte.

A Mega Campus for a Mega Move

One of the biggest shifts will be a R420m state-of-the-art mega campus in Sandton. Opening in 2026, it will merge Varsity College Sandton and Vega Bordeaux into a single site, with space for 9,000 students.

Students can look forward to a double-storey library, a student experience hub with career and counselling services, a custom-built indoor sports centre for international competitions, and innovation spaces like podcast studios, IT labs, and interactive mock classrooms.

Building on 30 Years of Excellence

Emeris will not just be a new name. It builds on more than three decades of private higher education. The institution boasts one of the strongest academic teams in the sector, with the majority of staff holding Master’s or Doctorates.

It has already accredited over 40 postgraduate programmes (including 13 Master’s and three Doctorates), with plans for more, such as new qualifications in Digital Learning and Learning Support. Emeris is also the only private institution in South Africa with ECSA accreditation for engineering programmes.

Why Emeris?

Louise Wiseman, Managing Director of Emeris, explains that the name comes from “Ephemeris” (the path of celestial objects) and “Emeritus” (earned success), symbolising the journey every student takes towards achievement.

“Emeris represents a bold step forward for private higher education in South Africa,” Wiseman said. “With this unification, we will enhance our ability to deliver exceptional higher education by consolidating resources and expertise.”

Looking Ahead

Emeris plans to deepen partnerships with industry and civil society to ensure graduates are workplace-ready, socially engaged, and equipped with skills in sustainability, environmental stewardship and ethical leadership.

Smaller classes, personalised support, and lecturers with real-world expertise will remain a hallmark of the institution.

When Emeris opens its doors in 2026, it will not just mark the beginning of a new brand. It will signal a new chapter in South African higher education.
