Three South African icons will come together around one table this Mandela Day as Sanctuary Mandela, Kruger Shalati and acclaimed chef Wandile Mabaso collaborate on an exclusive culinary experience celebrating the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
Taking place on 17 and 18 July at Sanctuary Mandela, Madiba’s former Houghton home in Johannesburg, From Kruger’s Kitchen to Madiba’s Table: An Iconic Food Journey marks what would have been Mandela’s 108th birthday while also recognising the centenary of Kruger National Park.
The experience is the first event in the new Motsamayi Chef Collaboration Series, bringing together exceptional South African chefs and destinations through food, storytelling and heritage.
A dinner inspired by legacy
Guests will enjoy a six-course dinner with wine pairing, preceded by welcome drinks, canapés and a guided heritage tour of Sanctuary Mandela.
Rather than individual seating, diners will share communal tables, reflecting the spirit of hospitality and togetherness that characterised meals in Mandela’s home.
The menu has been designed to celebrate both South Africa’s natural landscapes and Madiba’s personal connection to food, drawing inspiration from indigenous ingredients, the Lowveld and contemporary African cuisine.
The dishes have been created by Chef Mabaso alongside Mordecai Brauns, Head Chef at Insights restaurant within Sanctuary Mandela, and Vusi Blessing Mbatha, Executive Chef at Kruger Shalati.
Celebrating two national milestones
This year’s collaboration honours two significant anniversaries.
While South Africans commemorate Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy, 2026 also marks 100 years since the establishment of Kruger National Park.
According to the organisers, the dinner explores the connection between these milestones by celebrating the importance of conservation, heritage and the responsibility of preserving South Africa’s natural and cultural treasures for future generations.
More than fine dining
Beyond the dinner itself, the collaboration also includes a skills development initiative aimed at mentoring aspiring chefs and hospitality professionals.
The programme will provide practical learning opportunities and industry exposure, reflecting Mandela’s long-held belief in the transformative power of education.
