We’re thrilled to welcome Robyn Anthony to the 041online team – former journalist, current primary school teacher, and now the heart behind our new wellness series, 041fit(ish). Robyn joins us with a fresh, honest take on health and movement that embraces the imperfect, the emotional, and the deeply personal sides of wellness. In her first piece, she reflects on her own journey – one that’s less about gym selfies and more about survival, softness, and strength. If you’ve ever felt like you’re just winging it when it comes to health, this one’s for you.
“From Situationship to Self-Care: My Ongoing Wellness Story”
When it comes to fitness and health, my path has not been very linear. My relationship with fitness has been somewhat inconsistent and more of a situationship, I would say.
While I’ve always been somewhat into gymming and kind of active, I’ve never truly committed to an active lifestyle. I guess if you were to ask me, I would describe myself as fit-ish.
I think the reason for that is also more of an emotional link. Whenever I have felt down, exercise has always been an outlet for me, a way to get out of my own head by switching the focus. After a particular low point in my life a little while ago, I really struggled. I couldn’t get out of my funk alone.
I joined a pilates class more to just get out of the house. This really helped me because pilates is so focused on breathing to counts that your mind doesn’t have a chance to overthink. It’s just a time to focus on that moment. I also tried to go back to the gym, but I didn’t have the motivation, and I couldn’t commit to a full workout.
At that point, I reached out to Darushka at DCW. We had been chatting on and off for a few years about joining her studio, but it just never worked out. This time around, though, she was able to accommodate me.
When I first walked in, I knew that this was what I needed. The space has such a healing vibe about it, and the people are so inspiring. I walked in feeling low and lost, but after every session, I feel stronger in every way. I truly believe that things happen when they are supposed to, and my journey of fitness and healing and the people with me on my path are those who are meant to be here.
I think my journey through the years has taught me that there’s no right or wrong way to be healthy. You need to do what works for you. Whether it’s lifting weights in the gym, dance classes with friends, pilates, hiking, walking, playing with your kids, or just about anything, as long as you’re moving.
For me, right now, I’m trying to turn this situationship into a relationship, and this time around, I’m also learning that I’m not only doing it for myself but also for my little people who deserve a mom who is her best self, emotionally, mentally, and physically.
