Gqeberha NPOs, Take Note: ICASA Opens Community Radio Licence Applications

Public Info Session Set for Thursday, 22 May 2025 at Garden Court Hotel

GQBERHA, 14 May 2025 – The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has opened applications for Community Sound Broadcasting Service Licences and Radio Frequency Spectrum Licences, offering a valuable opportunity for non-profit organisations to launch their own local radio stations.

To assist prospective applicants, ICASA will host a public information session in Gqeberha on Thursday, 22 May 2025 at the Garden Court Hotel, Summerstrand. Registration starts at 09h30, with the programme beginning at 10h00.

Who Can Apply

The application window is open exclusively to non-profit organisations, such as NPOs, NPCs, and Trusts, that have been legally registered for at least two years. Applicants must show:

  • Strong community participation
  • A focus on development and empowerment
  • Compliance with ICASA’s regulations

Important: Current community radio licensees are not eligible. This window is strictly for new applicants.

Key Application Details

  • Deadline: Friday, 20 June 2025 at 16h00
  • Application Fee: R4,719.00 (non-refundable)
  • Applicants must select a preferred frequency from ICASA’s published list
  • Submissions must include:
    • A signal distributor agreement
    • A letter of support and/or ECNS licence
    • Technical feasibility documentation if applicable

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
