From screeching tyres and spectacular drifting to classic cars and family-friendly entertainment, the Killarney Motor Show brought together everything that makes motorsport exciting. Faziela Harris-Davids headed to Cape Town’s Killarney International Raceway with her family to experience the action firsthand, discovering an event with plenty to offer both dedicated petrolheads and those simply looking for a memorable day out.

The Sights, Sounds and Smells of Motorsport
I hear the tyres screeching in the distance. The unmistakable smell of burning rubber fills the air, and I know I’ve arrived at the Killarney Motor Show at Killarney International Raceway in Table View, Cape Town.
The parking area was packed, and the notorious Cape Town wind threatened to steal my hat more than once, but the atmosphere was electric. Grateful that I’d purchased my tickets online, we made our way to the stands just in time to watch drivers take to the track, spinning and drifting with impressive precision as clouds of smoke billowed behind them.
From RC Racing to Classic Cars
If the drifting was a feast for the eyes, the RC racing was a spectacle of its own. Watching those miniature cars tear around the track, I couldn’t help thinking that, from a child’s perspective, this was practically full-scale drag racing. Sharing the space were some beautiful classic cars, offering a nostalgic trip back to a time when petrol was affordable (cries in unleaded). Between vintage beauties and modern machines, there was plenty to keep car enthusiasts entertained.
One thing I particularly appreciated about this year’s setup was how thoughtfully the event catered to different interests and age groups. There really was something happening around every corner.
Drifting, Driving Experiences and Food Trucks
Tracktion Driving Experience had me practically glued to the track, watching drivers manoeuvre through their drifts with the kind of precision that would make Swan Lake jealous. The opportunity to experience the action from the passenger seat was certainly tempting, but with the children in tow, we decided that the food trucks were calling our names instead.
And what a welcome addition they were! With food trucks scattered throughout the venue, visitors could grab something to eat without everyone converging on one overcrowded area. It was a small detail that made a big difference to the overall experience.
More Than Just Cars
From impressive sound-offs to eye-catching vinyl wraps, one of the best things about the Killarney Motor Show is the sheer variety of vehicles on display. There’s always something new to admire, whether you’re drawn to the engineering, the aesthetics or simply the sound of a powerful engine. Or lets face it, the sound of music blasting away the last of your hearing.
The entertainment extended well beyond the track, too. Visitors were treated to performances and displays from Ramp Rodeo ActionSport (Skate/BMX), ClubS2K Show ‘n Shine, the President High School Drum Majorettes and the Pocketbike SA Competition. It was a wonderful mix of motorsport, performance and community entertainment that ensured there was never a dull moment.
Until Next Year, Killarney!
If I had one wish for next year’s show, it would be to see a few more sport bikes on display. But perhaps that’s just me being greedy and wanting a little more of everything!
All in all, the Killarney Motor Show delivered a fantastic day out for petrolheads, families and curious visitors alike. Whether you’re there for the roar of the engines, the polished classics, the adrenaline-fuelled action or simply a fun day out with the family, there’s plenty to enjoy.
Until next year, Killarney. Keep those engines revving!
