How You Can Make a Difference This National Nutrition Week

Good nutrition in the first years of life is one of the most powerful ways to invest in South Africa’s future. This National Nutrition Week (9–15 October) and World Food Day (16 October), the DO MORE FOUNDATION (DMF) is encouraging everyone to take action in support of children’s health and learning by focusing on one simple truth: well-fed children thrive.

Why Nutrition Matters

Research shows that when children do not get the nutrients they need in the first five years of life, their ability to learn and grow is affected for life. This period is when 90% of brain development takes place, so children need regular, balanced meals to reach their full potential.

Investing in nutrition is investing in South Africa’s future,” says Dr Jessica Ronassen, DMF’s Advocacy Lead. “When children are well-nourished, they are more likely to learn effectively, develop essential skills, and grow into healthy, capable adults.”

The Role of ECD Practitioners

Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners play a key role in ensuring young children receive the right nutrition and care. Every day, they prepare meals, teach healthy habits, and nurture children’s growth. For many children, an ECD centre meal is their main source of daily nourishment.

Many ECD centres, however, face real challenges with rising food prices and limited funding. Despite this, practitioners continue to show resilience and dedication to giving children the best possible start.

“When practitioners are supported with nutrition education and practical resources, they can also empower families to make better food choices at home,” says Ronassen.

What You Can Do This National Nutrition Week

This National Nutrition Week, everyone has a role to play in building healthier communities. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

  • Support local ECD centres by donating healthy non-perishable foods, fresh produce, or funds for meal preparation.
  • Start a workplace or community food drive to collect items for feeding schemes.
  • Share knowledge about affordable, balanced meals that promote healthy growth.
  • Partner with organisations like DMF that focus on early childhood nutrition and development.
  • Choose nutritious, budget-friendly foods for your own family and encourage others to do the same.

The DO MORE Foundation’s Impact

Since 2017, DMF has worked with ECD centres across South Africa to strengthen early nutrition through food provision, partnerships, and education. In the past year alone, the Foundation and its partners have delivered more than 7.5 million meals of DoMore Porridge to 35,000 children in 37 communities. The porridge is specially designed to support growth and brain development in children under five.

“DMF’s support ensures that children in our care are fed, healthy, and ready to learn,” says Nozibusiso Zikhaki of Lulamaphiko in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal. “It creates a more dignified environment for both children and practitioners.”

Working Together for Change

This is a moment of opportunity,” says Jabu Mthembu-Dlamini, DMF’s Young Child Programmes Lead. “We know what works, and we already have incredible communities and practitioners making a difference. Together, we can make sure every child has the nourishment they need to grow and succeed.”
