The atmosphere at the Boardwalk Mall in Gqeberha was nothing short of electric as influencers, media personalities, and loyal food lovers gathered to toast a major milestone. Marking 15 years of brand legacy nationwide and an incredible four years of serving up mouth-watering goodness right here in Gqeberha, Balkan Burger threw a celebration that effortlessly blended community spirit with a fresh take on culinary artistry, reimagining the traditional burger.
Guests were welcomed with crisp Aperol spritzes, vibrant photo moments, and an evening of seamless networking. The night’s surprises extended far beyond the plate, highlighted by an exclusive partnership with MG Cars (Tavcor Group). Sleek MG vehicles lined the entrance, whisking attendees away on a smooth, luxurious ride down to the beachside.
The Secret Recipe: Tenacity, Ubuntu, and Community
Behind the buzz of the Gqeberha concept store lies a rich journey rooted in resilience and connection. Reflecting on what it takes to achieve true longevity in the cutthroat hospitality industry, co-founder Lidija Ivanović shared insights into the brand’s core ethos:
“Tenacity, for sure, and just sheer determination… It just takes a good product, love for what you do, and just determination to make it work.”
What started in 2011 as a modest market stall in Johannesburg, founded by brother-and-sister duo Bojan and Lidija Ivanović, long before Instagram or social media dominance, grew entirely through word of mouth and an uncompromising commitment to quality. By flattening their patties, stuffing them with rich combinations of bacon, cheese, and Peppadew peppers, and crafting everything from scratch, they created an entirely distinct culinary movement.
Crucially, that growth has always been anchored in Ubuntu and family. Explaining how the brand builds deep connections with its patrons, Lidija noted:
“It was that Ubuntu, it was that solidarity with people that they wanted to share the find that they did… ‘I found this amazing burger, I want you to try it as well.’ And that is how that started.”
From Big City Roots to the Friendly City
Transitioning from Johannesburg’s fast-paced food truck and festival scene to a permanent coastal home wasn’t without its hurdles. As Ivanović candidly admitted about bringing their big-city energy to the Eastern Cape four years ago:
“We came in here with like big city energy, thinking everyone knew us, but they didn’t. We had to like start from grassroots again… This is actually our first restaurant where it’s a sit-down. The ones in Joburg, we have the food truck, we’ve got catering, and we’ve got a venue.”
Despite starting from scratch in a new market, the Gqeberha store quickly carved out a dedicated community of regulars. Offering a fully made-from-scratch menu, including their signature stuffed patties, custom sauces, and fresh breads, the brand continues to invite everyone into the family.
Driving Into the Future: The MG Cars Synergy
The celebration culminated in a major reveal: a powerful brand synergy between Balkan Burger Gqeberha and MG Cars (Tavcor Group), sealing an exciting chapter where great taste meets the open road.
Yamkela Koshiwe, Corporate Sales representative for MG Cars, shed light on why the iconic automotive brand decided to join forces with the culinary team:
“I think the, the one aspect about Balkan Burger that made us partner with them is their presence, social media wise, especially since they are four years now in PE. And we are also re establishing in South Africa, not just PE. So it was a partnership that just came together.”
Highlighting the shared energy of both brands, Koshiwe added:
“It’s because of the presence of social media and the loudness that they have about their food, so we also want to be loud about our vehicle… We want to be loud about our cars.”
As the brand drives forward into its next era, one thing remains certain: whether through a smooth seaside cruise in an MG or an unforgettable meal at the Boardwalk Mall, Balkan Burger is built for the community, fuelled by love, and driven to last.
