041 Online was invited to the opening evening of by Design, and it quickly became clear that this wasn’t just another new business opening. It was the coming together of creativity, passion and community.
Nestled in Walmer, by Design is a space where ideas come to life. It’s somewhere to wander, be inspired and appreciate creativity in its many forms.
Where creativity comes together
The concept is beautifully simple.
A husband with a passion for interior design, and a wife whose love for flowers, plants and art has shaped her own creative journey, have combined their talents to create one thoughtfully curated destination. Together, they’ve built a space where every corner reflects something they genuinely love.
Here, flowers become works of art, plants bring life into every space, interiors are carefully crafted with bespoke furniture and beautiful fabrics, and the walls celebrate the incredible talent of local artists.
One of my favourite parts was the outdoor area. Tucked away in a peaceful garden setting, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, catch up with a friend over coffee or simply enjoy a quiet moment away from the rush of the day.
More than a design store
As I wandered through each room, I couldn’t help but think… when did we stop making time for places that simply inspire us?
By Design isn’t about rushing in and out. It’s about discovering something unexpected. You may arrive looking for flowers, leave inspired by a local artist, start imagining your next home project or simply spend a little longer than you planned because the space makes you want to.
It’s the kind of place Port Elizabeth has been waiting for. A creative hub where flowers, art, interiors, plants and good conversation all exist under one roof.
After all, the best spaces aren’t always the ones that ask for your attention.
