The Algoa Bay Whale Festival returns to Nelson Mandela Bay on 6 and 7 June 2026 with a weekend celebrating marine conservation, coastal heritage and the annual humpback whale migration along the Eastern Cape coastline.
Taking place at the Willows Resort and Conference Centre, the festival combines ocean exploration, science, family entertainment and local creativity in a fun and educational setting.
Saturday focuses on ocean exploration and conservation
Saturday’s programme begins with the new Aweh-Let’s Swim “Rocking the Whale Tail” Ocean Swim, followed by guided conservation and historical walks led by Nature Guide Graeme Pienaar and historian Graham Taylor.
Visitors can also enjoy a series of marine-focused talks from experts including Dr Paul Trixier, Prof Pierre Pistorius, Antonia Immerz and Aaron Barnes, covering topics from killer whales to African penguins and deep-sea ecosystems.
A major highlight is the Addo Submarine Canyon showcase, which explores one of South Africa’s most important yet lesser-known marine ecosystems and the role it plays in supporting whales, dolphins and deep-sea life.
Sunday brings markets, music and family fun
Sunday welcomes guests with performances by African Drumbeat drummers and marimbas, setting the tone for a lively family day out.
Families can enjoy virtual reality experiences, jumping castles and interactive exhibits from organisations including Bayworld, SANCCOB and the Waste Trade Recycling Project.
The festival will also feature local artisans, conservation exhibitors, food trucks and live music performances throughout the day, ending with a fire-dancing finale by the Fyre Team under the stars.
Whether you are passionate about conservation, fascinated by marine life or simply looking for a family-friendly weekend activity, the Algoa Bay Whale Festival 2026 promises something for everyone.
