ELEANOR DOUGLAS-MEYERS
In Kariega, where neighbourliness is second nature but structured ways to connect can feel few and far between, something special happens when Fatima Davids presses play on a Zumba track.
It’s not just music and movement, it’s permission. To laugh. To sweat. To heal. To belong.
“My love for interacting with people in general, as a nurse, came through in my attending Zumba classes,” she says. “I just fell in love with having a happy hour with strangers, walking out there feeling empowered and looking like a glazed doughnut.”
This year, Fatima celebrates nine years as part of the global Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN). Her journey started at the UTH Sport Centre, with a nervous warm-up and 30 curious women.
“I was SO nervous,” she remembers. “But once I started the warm-up, I got into it. I looked at their faces and saw the smiles, and I knew I was home.”
Movement with Meaning
Fatima was only the second Zumba instructor in town at the time, and interest grew fast. So fast that she had to find a bigger venue. Word of mouth—and a warm, inclusive energy that can’t be faked- packed out her classes.
“I started off small and grew a larger audience… but classes have their seasons,” she reflects. “Still, I remain positive and humble knowing I give my all, be it 50 ladies or 5.”
And they give back.
“Honestly, without the love, support and acceptance from the community, I wouldn’t be able to have class to begin with.”
Her sessions, held less frequently now due to her full-time nursing work and side hustle as an aspiring makeup artist, remain some of the most well-attended group classes in Kariega.
A Soft Place to Land
Over the years, Fatima has offered more than choreography and calorie burn. Her Zumba classes have become a steady anchor for women navigating the push and pull of everyday life. Between dance breaks, she offers words of encouragement, sometimes humour, sometimes healing.
“It’s the easiest way to make new friends, and such a welcoming community out here,” she says. “Attending local events in other cities, meeting other instructors for the first time, and just coming together on the dance floor, phenomenal, I tell you.”
There have been standout moments along the way:
“My very first masterclass at Willow Dam for Human Rights Day, I had over 100 ladies, and it was magical,” she says. “And my first cancer charity event for the CANSA Association. Dancing for a cause… what a rewarding feeling!”
But it’s the quieter affirmations that linger.
“Many friendships have been built over the years. I have my day-one girlies that are still with me to this day. And getting feedback like, ‘Thank you for making me feel better and confident in my body, ’ it’s priceless.”
The Class That Held Her Together
“Okay, so I may get a bit deep now…” she begins. And then, honestly:
“Being a nurse, I have a busy schedule with working shifts. I use Zumba as my therapy, more so because I suffer from anxiety. And this class—with these ladies—helped me through tough times. I felt that love and acceptance. Magical, I tell you. And of course, I get to stay fit and in shape. Healthy body, healthy mind.”
Through her vulnerability, Fatima makes space for others.
“You needn’t look like me. You can stand at the back, I’ll stand next to you as long as you keep moving. Always.”
Come As You Are
Her classes are loud in the best way: music, laughter, shouts of encouragement, and the odd whoop of victory after nailing a tricky combo.
“Expect me to give you mad energy,” she says. “I’ve been doing it for 9 years, so be ready to move and shake and glow for the Zumba gods!”
And if you’re not sure you can dance? That’s fine too.
“100% beginner-friendly. We all started somewhere – and now we’re hooked,” she says. “Ask my students! No dancing background? Okay, but I’m sure you love music, right? Let me take the steps with you!”
Her #BEYOUTIFUL theme keeps the focus on comfort and confidence.
“Emphasis on be you and what makes you comfortable,” she says. “And yes, I’ve got prize giveaways for the best vibing student. So I’ll be watching you!”
Looking Ahead
Right now, Fatima is the only active Zumba instructor in Kariega. She hopes to collaborate with local gyms, grow her reach, and maybe one day trade her sneakers for sea legs.
“They have Zumba cruises,” she laughs. “Fun in the sun with your newfound Zumba bestie, imagine that!”
Her biggest dream?
“I would love to save up and have the opportunity to go to the ZIN Convention in Orlando, Florida.”
And Finally…
“Be true to yourself. ALWAYS. Bad days are okay – but don’t stay there,” she says. “Get up and come find me.”
“Be strong. Be resilient. And remember… BeYOUtiful.”
