Dricus Du Plessis Swapped Punches for Petrol in TopGear SA’s New Series – And Set the Pace

“Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” launched with a knockout first episode

Last week, UFC Middleweight World Champion Dricus Du Plessis traded in his G-Wagon for a Suzuki Swift — and still managed to bring the heat. In the premiere episode of TopGear South Africa’s new YouTube series, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, the champ proved that his skills extend far beyond the Octagon.

The episode, which dropped on Thursday 22 May, marked the debut of a proudly local twist on a global TopGear favourite — one that puts South African celebrities and sports stars in a humble hatchback to tackle the Formula K kart circuit. The mission? Set the fastest lap time and claim bragging rights on the celeb leaderboard.

Dricus was the first to step up, and it’s safe to say he made it count.

No Turbo, No Problem
Forget horsepower. This challenge is all about technique. Celebs are handed the keys to a standard Suzuki Swift and asked to deliver a quick, clean lap on a tight, technical track. Afterwards, they head to the studio for a high-energy interview with comedian and car enthusiast Jason Goliath.

In true champ style, Dricus leaned into the pressure. With a family background in oval-track racing and plenty of seat time under his belt, he knew exactly how to approach the challenge. His lap was fast, fearless, and smooth — setting a benchmark that future guests will struggle to beat.

Fight Week, Fast Laps, and Real Talk
What makes the episode special isn’t just the lap — it’s the personality behind the wheel. In conversation with Jason Goliath, Dricus opened up about everything from his racing roots to the intensity of UFC fight prep. They covered mental toughness, balance, adrenaline, and the drive it takes to compete at the highest level — whether on the mat or on the track.

The banter was fast, the energy was high, and the pride in South African talent was front and centre.

If You Missed It, You’ll Want to Catch Up
The episode is now live on YouTube, and it’s a strong opening round for the series. With a clean production style, sharp editing, and two big personalities at the wheel, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car feels like the start of something big for motoring content in South Africa.
