South Africa’s oldest newspaper, The Herald, is about to hit an incredible milestone — 180 years of fearless journalism, powerful storytelling, and standing strong with the Eastern Cape community.
And instead of just throwing a party, The Herald is doing what it does best: giving back.
Partnering with the Kolisi Foundation
Ahead of the big birthday on 7 May 2025, The Herald is hosting a gala dinner and concert on 2 May 2025, with all proceeds going to the Kolisi Foundation, founded by Gqeberha’s own Siya Kolisi.
The foundation’s mission — tackling education, sports development, gender-based violence, and food security — is a perfect match for The Herald‘s long-standing commitment to real change.
“This collaboration was important for us because we wanted to ensure that we give back to the community that has supported us over the years,” said The Herald editor Rochelle de Kock.
“And what better project to support than the incredible work being done by the Kolisi Foundation?”
De Kock said reaching 180 years, especially in print media, was a major achievement.
“We’ve been the eyes, ears, and voice of this community for 180 years — and the impact has been immense.”
Making a Real Difference
Kolisi Foundation partnership manager Lauren Budde said the support would fast-track their work across six schools in Zwide, helping 3,600 pupils.
“It means a tremendous amount to us,” Budde said.
“The Herald could have celebrated alone, but choosing us speaks volumes about their commitment to community development.”
Funds will go towards education, sports, life skills, nutrition and mental health programmes for pupils who need it most.
